WinSport Canada Olympic Park – Project Highlight

SPG developed a Net Zero strategy and conducted energy modeling of the facilities to support WinSport in their application to Natural Resource Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Building Funding Program (GICB).

WinSport contracted SPG to conduct 9 ASHRAE Level 2 audits on facilities within Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, AB, including ice making facilities, several Olympic sized rinks, a ski hill, several complex HVAC systems, and several training facilities, day lodges, and maintenance areas. Following these audits, SPG developed a Net Zero strategy and conducted RETScreen modeling of the facilities to support WinSport in their application to Natural Resource Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Building Funding Program (GICB).

SPG organized a kick-off meeting and established a schedule for site assessments, analysis, draft report submissions, and final reporting. Two energy auditors visited the local site and conducted assessments over several days. Historical data such as utility data, previous audits, building drawings, etc. was collected from WinSport. Once all on-site data was collected, analysts compiled and analyzed the data and to develop the appropriate Level 2 Energy Audit Report. Energy audit reports included an assessment of the current conditions of the building and relevant systems, utility analysis, proposed energy conservation measures (ECMs) (inclusive of capital improvements and any relevant changes to the operation and maintenance procedures and costs). All ECMs include energy and cost savings, GHG reduction potential, and cost analysis.  This audit identified over 100 distinct energy conservation projects on the site and motivated a $20M dollar application to the GICB program for deep energy retrofits. SPG’s staff identified measures on building envelope, HVAC, water reduction, lighting, electrical, operational measures, and renewables, and completed the site visit, analysis, energy modelling, and report writing within 1.5 months of contract award.

A Net Zero Strategy was then developed using the proposed measures as a guideline; SPG experts outlined a recommended implementation schedule based on a needs assessment, available budget, funding program availability, and GHG emissions reductions potential. RETScreen models were developed by the energy team and used to support a multi-million dollar funding application to the GICB program.
